Pensby School Careers Support

Last week Matt Breakwell had the (frankly terrifying) privilege to speak to an assembly of year 10 and 11 students at Pensby High School as part of his role as an Enterprise Advisor for the Liverpool City Region Careers Hub.

He talked about the green jobs being created in our industry in the race to Net Zero and the excellent career opportunities available through TLevels and Craft, Technical and Degree Apprenticeships in Building Services Engineering.

As a business, we understand that if we’re going to meet our net zero goals, we need to encourage more young people, from all parts of our society, to consider a career in engineering. No-one is getting to Net Zero without engineers!

The school are keen to show students what employers are looking for when they are recruiting, so Matt shared his own top ten tips to stand out when applying for a job, and making the best impression at an interview.

When we’re recruiting for apprentices, our main focus is finding someone that is keen to learn and has a genuine interest in engineering, along with the character, attitude and behaviours we’re looking for.

A really engaging cover letter can open doors and a great placement can instantly let us know we’ve found the right fit for us. At the same time, it allows the students to be sure that our industry is the right fit for them.

In Matt’s words, “Speaking to 340 14/15 year-olds first thing on a Monday morning, was probably my toughest public speaking gig yet and I have all the respect in the world for our teachers that do it every day!

I’ll be back at Pensby High School with my colleague Niamh Smith, delivering mock interview sessions to students next month. I’m looking forward to finding out whether I made any impact, or if I bored them to death – here’s hoping!”
